Synopsis
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secret and long-running events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. The actions taken by Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals during the conclave in the film are in keeping with the Catholic faith and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican officially announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant. The papal apartment is actually enclosed with a crimson ribbon and sealed with a papal wax seal. The College of Cardinals was actually locked in apartments (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. And the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections and voting take place, are indeed blacked out, closed and locked to maintain the secrecy of the conclave.

All the cardinals are fluent in Latin and many hold conversations in Italian. Both Spanish and Italian are derived from Latin, so the cardinals may have a basic understanding of Spanish. The 2016 novel CONCLAVE takes viewers inside the Vatican during the meeting of the College of Cardinals. the process of choosing a new pope… filled with political conflict, twists and turns, and surprises galore. And… if the average age of the people in the theater I attended is any indication… “Adults” flock to this movie. Directed by Edward Berger (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT), CONCLAVE moves quickly and unfolds the mystery—not “whodunit” but “who gets it” mystery—and it gets surprisingly tense. That’s thanks in part to the good, good actors who star in this movie. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the HARRY POTTER movies) directs events as “Dean,” a cardinal tasked with leading a diverse group of cardinals toward a consensus selection of the next pope.
Now, some would say that this final twist is the point of the movie, but
He acts as both detective and assistant while battling his own sense of faith…and ambition…while uncovering the schemes and machinations of some of the “humble servants” vying for the top job. John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini and many others (mostly unknown) vying for “pole position” in the race to become the next Pope. Of particular note is the GREAT Stanley Tucci for his support as one of the candidates whose agenda sounds like “I don’t want this” but underneath really, really wants it. Don’t be surprised if Fiennes and Tucci (as well as director Berger) get mentioned around Oscar nomination time (they’re that good). As mentioned above, this movie has twists and turns and it’s fun to ride those twists and turns, but to be honest, I felt like that was it. the movie went through a “far” twist and should/could have ended 10 minutes earlier (minus the final twist).
