William Lee: Sit on Your Ass!

Synopsis

In 1950s Mexico City, a former American in his forties lives among a small American community of loners. However, the arrival of a new student prompts the man to finally make a meaningful connection with someone. Ultimately, it was Daniel Craig who convinced Luca Guadagnino to play Drew Starkey after watching tapes of Guadagnino and telling him "That's the guy" after watching Starkey… Or What Remains of Him After Four Years in the Navy..

Unfortunately, the film fell short of these efforts

Introducing Orpheus (1950). I approached the release of Queer with high hopes, hoping that it would offer a deeply moving and unforgettable cinematic experience. Of particular interest was the casting of Daniel Craig as the odd man out. It marked a departure from his iconic James Bond image in a suit and provided an opportunity to showcase his versatility and depth as an actor.

Queer’s main flaw is that it lacks a single narrative

Instead of delivering a structured and engaging narrative, the film feels more like a collection of loosely connected scenes. It centers on an alcoholic gay writer living in Mexico City, a premise that had the potential to be a profound exploration of isolation, identity, and personal struggle. However, the execution is flawed, and this promising concept never fully materializes. It remains a fragmented and disjointed plot that fails to make meaningful emotional or thematic connections.

Ultimately, Queer is a wasted opportunity

This disjointed approach undermines the film’s potential as a character study. While Daniel Craig’s performance is solid, it is limited by a script that doesn’t give him much to do. His performance is overshadowed by the directionless storytelling that could have been a bold and career-defining role that went unfulfilled. It’s frustrating to see an actor of Craig’s caliber fail to shine due to the limitations of the material.

Unfortunately, I can’t give this film more than three stars

Its fragmented narrative and inability to engage with its themes create an empty and unfulfilling viewing experience. While the film flirts with the promise of emotional depth, it never quite ends, leaving viewers questioning what they’ve just seen.
